As a kid growing up in Pennsylvania,Lucien Weiss loved playing with Lego blocks. Now 31 years old and a post-doctoral student thousands of miles away from home, his childish enthusiasm hasn't waned-and those plastic toys are serving as the building blocks to his scientific research.
Weiss studied chemistry at Harvard, and received his Ph.D.at Stanford. He now lives in the Israeli town of Haifa and studies at the famous Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, known in some circles as the MIT of the Mediterranean. In a lab of the Emerson Family Life Sciences Building,he and his colleagues are using high-tech equipment, even Lego blocks as a way to test theories.
So how did a kid from a small town in the US end up in a lab in northern Israel?Weiss should thank Mortimer Zuckerman for that.Zuckerman's the current publisher of US News&World Report. In 2016,he donated$100 million to help support students like Weiss in science, technology, engineering and math in the United States and Israel.
As part of the Mortimer B.Zuckerman STEM Leadership Program,high-achieving postdoctoral scholars from famous universities in the United States are given scholarships to do research at one of seven Israeli universities.Once they complete their research, many Zuckerman postdocs like Weiss are expected to accept faculty positions at top North American universities, creating a network of racademic collaboration(合作)between US and Israeli institutions.[
When asked if devoting his life to science was something he thought about growing up,Weiss laughed."I think what was special about coming here in general is that so many of your interests get satisfied.Growing up,I was certainly interested in science and I come from a family of scientists. But I also enjoy traveling and new experiences just as much.Israel's a place that you grow up reading about in all of your history courses-and it's all right here.”
