I’m Encouraged to Go Higher
A few years ago, when I was living in Jordan with my diplomat husband, I decided it was time to get my middle-aged self back in shape. The gym was tiny, without much 41 to exercise, I was the weakest person there day after day, and I felt out of 42 as I did my push-ups, squats ( 蹲 坐 ), and dead lifts. Nobody there really seemed to 43 me, but I was aware that I felt sort of 44 . Still, I showed up, because I could tell I was making progress-I was getting 45 .
One day I was on my favorite 46 , one that nobody else in the gym ever needed to
47 : the assisted pull-up machine, which let me 48 the process of a proper pull-up without requiring me to pull all of my 49 up to the bar. I had just finished a set
50 a guy whom I knew but had never really talked to, 51 up to me and asked, “Why are you always doing assisted pull-ups?” I looked at him, 52 , searching for an answer. “Because I can’t do real ones,” I finally 53 .
“Yes, you can,” he said. “ I’ve seen you. You are strong. Get over here, and I’ll 54 you.”
We walked over to the “ 55 ” pull-up bar, and he told me: Instead of pulling yourself up, you start at the top and slowly 56 yourself down. He watched me do a couple. “Keep 57 , ” he told me. “By the end of the month, you’ll he able to 58 four or five.”
After that day. I started to love going to that gym. I was 59 the weakest one there.

But I could do pull-ups! First two, then five, then nine. The 60 was that nobody was laughing at me. There were teachers everywhere in that gym, who pushed me to be better.
