I took a job as a receptionist for a veterinarian (兽医) almost five decades ago. As an enthusiastic animal lover, I couldn’t bear to see any creature in pain.
At the end of my first week, we are closing the office for the day   1   a young man ran up to us holding a severely injured Doberman puppy in his arms and   2   us to save his life.
The doctor and I ran back into the   3   room. The vet worked  4   for what seemed like hours, stitching(缝合)him back together again. That was the easy   5  . The puppy had broken multiple   6  , including his spine (脊柱). Even if he survived the next few days, we were quite sure he would never   7   again.
That day forever changed my life. The veterinarian guided me, and I became his assistant in all things  8  . One of my first jobs was to give that Doberman puppy daily physical care. I remember  9   his tiny legs to try to keep his muscles from becoming  10  . Weeks later,  to my relief, he could use his legs again.
Fast-forward about a year. I walked into the clinic's waiting room and called the name of the next client. Suddenly, a huge Doberman who had been standing   11   with his owner on the opposite side of the room   12  loose and rushed toward me. I found myself pinned    13   the wall with this magnificent dog standing on his legs, his front paws on my shoulders,  14  my face with joyful and abundant kisses!
I still tear up in amazement at the display of love and   15   the dog had for me that day all those years ago.
