When it comes to tap dancing(踢踏舞), you might imagine a black-and-white movie with an actor dressed in a black tie. Tap dancing might not seem something popular and modern. If that is how you imagine tap dancing, then you, like a lot of others, have never seen Savion Glover dance! This tap dancer, choreographer(舞蹈编导),director, and producer, taught by excellent dancers from previous generations has changed the way people think about tap dancing today.
Savion Glover was born on November 19, 1973 in Newark, New Jersey, USA. He showed a gift for music as a young child. By the time he was seven, Savion had begun taking tap classes at the Broadway Dance Center in New York. Before he went to the center, his family could not afford the special shoes he needed. He had to wear a pair of cowboy boots to his first lesson! Just a few years later, he played his first role in a Broadway performance, The Tap Dance Kid. He took part in other productions, and even made a movie.
In 1995, Savion choreographed and starred in a production called Bring in da Noise,Bring in da Funk. The show followed African American history from the times of slavery through the 20th century. People loved its story, and were amazed at how the story could be expressed through dance. Bring in da Noise,Bring in da Funk won four Tony Awards, the highest honor a musical can receive. One of those awards was for best choreographer, Savion Glover.
The style of tap that Savion is best known for is often called street tap. It is a hard-hitting form of tap, and it includes more difficult movements than traditional taps. Savion studies jazz, funk,hip-hop, rock 'n' roll, the blues, and other dance styles to make something special and exciting. People love to watch Savion's feet move. It is hard to keep up with them, but that is part of the fun in watching Savion Glover dance!
